After a complete redesign for the 11th-generation Honda Civic, how does it compare to Honda’s other popular sedan, the recently redesigned Honda Accord? Both new sedans offer advanced technology, plenty of performance and sophisticated good looks. The Honda Civic is a smaller sedan, also available as a hatchback, compared to the roomier Accord, also available as a hybrid. Generally, the Honda Civic has been for the young (or young at heart), and the Honda Accord is considered a family or professional car. But with the 2022 Civic’s sleek new look, is that still the case? Let’s compare Honda’s best-selling sedans.
The previous version of the Honda Civic was in the love-it-or-hate-it arena due to more extreme styling. For the 2022 model year, Honda gave the new Civic a more sophisticated and streamlined look, inside and out. The Honda Accord got a slight exterior refresh in 2021. Both sedans are handsome and offer wide appeal. But where they differ is inside. While the Honda Accord has a similar cabin style to the 2022 Honda Civic, the new Civic gets a more modern feel thanks to well-placed design accents, including mesh, textured dials and patterned trim.
Cargo and Passenger Space
The 2021 Honda Accord is simply larger than the 2022 Honda Civic. So, if space is your main consideration, the new Accord is the roomy choice. However, the differences are minimal, except for in rear cargo room. Headroom and front legroom are within centimeters of each other, but the Honda Accord does offer three more inches of rear legroom. The Honda Accord has one of the largest trunks in the sedan segment at 16.7 cubic feet. Fold down the second row to stow bulky items. The new Honda Civic Hatchback does boast 24.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the second-row – but it’s not technically a sedan. The 2022 Civic Sedan still has up to 14.8 cubic feet in the trunk.
The new 2022 Honda Civic features a standard 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC® engine with 158 horsepower or upgrade to a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. The new Accord features a standard 1.5L turbocharged engine with 192 horsepower or an upgrade to the 252 horsepower turbocharged 2.0L engine. The Honda Civic is slightly more sporty in drive feel, but the Honda Accord is controlled, responsive and smooth. Both Honda sedans are enjoyable to drive and have plenty of pep.
The tech inside the new Honda Civic is some of the most advanced Honda technology yet. The 2021 Honda Accord has a single 8-inch touchscreen across all trims, and the new 2022 Civic offers a standard 7-inch screen or a 9-inch screen in the top-tier Civic Touring model. The new Civic features a 10.3-inch digital gauge display that is missing from the Accord, but the Civic does not offer Head-Up Display as the Accord Touring and Accord Hybrid do. The new Honda Civic Touring is the first Civic to include a premium 12-speaker Bose® audio system. You get Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Bluetooth and USB ports in either sedan.
